The toxic by-product of those fortunes-what didn’t spill into the river-was dumped in Opportunity. What he found instead was a century’s worth of industrial poison clotting the Clark Fork River, a decades-long engineering project to clean it up, and a forgotten town named Opportunity.Īt the turn of the nineteenth century, Montana exploited the richest copper deposits in the world, fueling the electric growth of twentieth-century America and building some of the nation’s most outlandish fortunes. The son of an engineer who reclaimed wastewater, Tyer was looking for a pristine river to call his own. In 2002, Texas journalist Brad Tyer strapped a canoe on his truck and moved to Montana, a state that has long exerted a mythic pull on America’s imagination as an unspoiled landscape. A memoir-meets-exposé that examines our fraught relationship with the West and our attempts to clean up a toxic environmental legacy What at first begins as a fake, Instagrammable friendship grows deeper, and more dangerous, than either Alex or Henry could have imagined. Heads of family and state and other handlers devise a plan for damage control: Stage a truce between the two rivals. And when the tabloids get hold of a photo involving an Alex/Henry altercation, U.S./British relations take a turn for the worse. There's only one problem: Alex has a beef with an actual prince, Henry, across the pond. Handsome, charismatic, genius-his image is pure millennial-marketing gold for the White House. When his mother became President of the United States, Alex Claremont-Diaz was promptly cast as the American equivalent of a young royal. What happens when America's First Son falls in love with the Prince of Wales? Scandals produced by the sexual obsessions of father and sons (.) threaten the private stability of the patriarchal household, the public respectability all-important to its perilous social standing, indeed the stability of traditional Muslim structures themselves. When the tornado hits, Dovey, a local laundress, is flung by the terrifying winds into a nearby lake. on Palm Sunday, April 5, 1936, a massive funnel cloud flashing a giant fireball and roaring like a runaway train careened into the thriving cotton-mill town of Tupelo, Mississippi, killing more than 200 people, not counting an unknown number of black citizens, one-third of Tupelo’s population, who were not included in the official casualty figures. “Gwin’s gift shines in the complexity of her characters and their fraught relationships with each other, their capacity for courage and hope, coupled with their passion for justice.” - Jonis Agee, bestselling author of The River WifeĪ few minutes after 9 p.m. In the aftermath of a devastating tornado that rips through the town of Tupelo, Mississippi, at the height of the Great Depression, two women worlds apart-one black, one white one a great-grandmother, the other a teenager-fight for their families’ survival in this lyrical and powerful novel They would speak up if they possibly could. Their silence isn’t due to selfishness or fear. Also, the princesses are physically prevented from speaking about the curse-they’ve tried, but they speak only gibberish. This makes more sense to me and also keeps the king from being an irrational monster. The princes who fail all die of accidents due to the curse rather than being killed by the king because they failed. The curse is the result of long, patient, and intricate planning by the evil King Under Stone, a very powerful being. It takes cunning, courage, and knowledge on the part of the eldest princess (Rose), Galen, and a couple of ancient magicians. Their attempts to rescue themselves have fallen short-but even the hero (in this version, a soldier-turned-gardener named Galen) can’t do this alone. They are caught up in machinations they had no part in, and they are for the most part powerless pawns, but this is done without making them passive. The curse is explored in full and the princesses are sympathetic. It’s the first book in a trilogy following the twelve princesses, each book focusing on a different princess. Princess of the Midnight Ball is probably my favorite retelling of “The Twelve Dancing Princesses” (and yes, there are a lot to choose from!). Beyond pure enjoyment, Roach book also shows just how enmeshed certain sectors of the scientific community have become, in the past two centuries, in matters of belief. This book is, without question, a rollicking good read. The stranger it gets, the happier Roach seems to be. As with her other work, Spook is infused with Roach's sense of humor and her clear fascination with the bizarre. She writes of doctors who attached dying consumptives to giant scales. She brings us the story of the woman who could vomit large quantities of fabric on demand in the name of talking to the dead. To give a full picture of these efforts Roach's research takes her across cultures and continents. In particular, the book examines scientists' efforts to to offer measurable proof of the existence of the soul, and their attempts to understand what happens to immaterial parts of personhood after death. Whereas Stiff examined the ultimate fate of cadavers, Spook looks to the soul. In Spook Roach jumps from the physical to the metaphysical. Ever since I read Stiff, I've been waiting in anticipation for her next book. I think Mary Roach is a hilarious writer. So pervasive are human impacts on the planet that it's said we live in a new geological epoch: the Anthropocene. That man should have dominion "over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth" is a prophecy that has hardened into fact. But Abbi had always found comfort in solitude, and needed space to step back and hit the reset button. When Abbi Jacobson announced to friends and acquaintances that she planned to drive across the country alone, she was met with lots of questions and opinions: Why wasn't she going with friends? Wouldn't it be incredibly lonely? The North route is better! Was it safe for a woman? The Southern route is the way to go! You should bring mace! And a common one.
